IMPROVING SCOTLAND DENY FAVOURITES RECORD
by Matt McGeehan

Tournament favourites Australia were denied a Commonwealth record as they defeated Scotland 32-0 at Challenge Stadium, Perth on Wednesday.

Scotland did not give up, with Lynne Baird once again starring in goal and Sam Souter hitting the post.

The Scots found it difficult to cope with the pace and power of the Australian's. Cathy Burns was excluded during the first attack of the game and Fiona Hammond opened the scoring. There were further goals from Melissa Rippon (2), Suzie Fraser and Gemma Beadsworth before Burns was excluded again.

Rippon scored her third of the period and Australia were coasting. They kept up the pressure on the Scotland arc, pressing high and stealing the ball. Scotland succumbed to the pressure, often forcing the ball with plenty of time on the possession clock, only to see their passes intercepted and an Australian counter-attack.

Scotland improved dramatically in the second quarter. Gael Logan denied Jenna Santoromito a certain goal when she tackled her in front of Baird's net. Baird made a number of outstanding saves and Susan Johnstone made a fantastic block. Lynn Ruddock also prevented the Australian's adding to their tally.

At the other end, Caroline Connor hit the Australian crossbar with a shot from six metres and Julia MacKay worked tirelessly in the pit.

Mia Santoromito was excluded for a foul on MacKay early in the third period. Captain Fiona Greer's shot was heading for the top-corner before substitute 'Keeper Danielle Bower saved.

Australia continued to press high, putting relentless pressure on Scotland. They scored further goals through Beadsworth, and Yvette Ballagow. Ballagow was excluded for a foul on MacKay, but Scotland forced the play and Australia won the ball and countered to score through Mia Santoromito.

Burns forced Bower into another spectacular save, but Australia's lead was 26-0 after the third period.

The Tartan Army at Challenge Stadium and those watching on the net at home were hoping for a goal and Souter tried to deliver. Souter shot from ten metres, but she did not test Bower. Then Souter hit the post - the closest the Scots came to scoring - with the ball ricocheting to an Australian player who swam the length of the pool to score.

Baird prevented Australia from setting a new Commonwealth scoring record with two more World-class saves before the final whistle.

Mr Theo Bampouras, the Scotland coach, said: "It was a very good effort.

"We lost focus a couple of times, but most of the things we've been working on have worked."
